Breaking down the addiction to the “next best thing” and why it’s time to start cherishing what we have. XOXO

Hello, my ItGirls,

Let’s be real for a sec: our society has gone wild with overconsumption. Everywhere you look, it’s the same story – people chasing the newest trend, obsessing over the “next big thing,” and filling their carts faster than you can say “add to basket.” And, guess what? The problem isn’t just with older generations – it’s a full-on Gen Z epidemic! Now, I’m not here to shame anyone (because trust me, I’m guilty too), but it’s high time we take a good, hard look at our shopping habits. Can we just slow down and start appreciating what we already have? Or is the thrill of something new just too tempting?

We’ve become so hooked on the rush of newness, haven’t we? I mean, look at our social feeds – it’s a carousel of influencers with the latest skincare serums, everyone showing off a new outfit every other day, and enough “hauls” to fill a warehouse. It’s like we’re in this endless shopping loop, and it’s so easy to get sucked in. But let’s think about it: how many of these new products or clothes end up collecting dust? How many of these “essentials” do we end up actually loving? The truth is, we’ve developed an addiction to overconsumption that’s not only unsustainable but also not-so-cute for our mental health, our bank accounts, and, yes, the planet.

Now, I’m not saying you shouldn’t treat yourself (who doesn’t love a new bag or skincare product here and there?). But when we’re constantly splurging, it gets to the point where it’s not about cherishing a beautiful item but rather just getting the next shiny thing. This obsession with constant upgrades and “revolutionary” products makes us lose sight of what we already own and, dare I say, love. It’s the classic case of FOMO (Fear of Missing Out) – everyone’s flaunting their newest finds, so of course, you feel like you need them too. But here’s a little secret, darling: 90% of the time, you’re not actually missing out on anything!

Social media, of course, plays a massive part in all of this. Every scroll and swipe makes it seem like everyone has something bigger, better, and shinier. Fashion? It’s not enough to own a fabulous blazer – you need this season’s blazer. Skincare? Forget that moisturiser you splurged on last month; there’s a new “holy grail” everyone’s raving about. Even lifestyle trends are ever-changing – one week, it’s all about minimalism, and the next, we’re diving into maximalist, retro rooms. And we, my loves, are getting swept along without realising it’s all… well, exhausting.

And here’s the kicker – there’s a little trick I bet you didn’t know. Companies and brands, they love to feed this need for more. Limited releases, exclusives, the allure of “this won’t last long!” – it’s all designed to make us feel like we have to buy it now or miss out. They know exactly how to keep us coming back, desperate for that next purchase, and, honestly, we’re playing right into their hands.

Don’t get me wrong; I’m not saying we should all go minimalist (not that there’s anything wrong with that vibe). But what if we just hit the brakes and appreciated what’s already in our wardrobes, our beauty drawers, our homes? Imagine actually loving the pieces you have rather than getting bored of them after two wears. Imagine feeling confident in that one outfit that makes you look and feel amazing – rather than endlessly buying and tossing because nothing feels like “enough.” We’re drowning in stuff, and it’s time we realised that owning more doesn’t necessarily mean living better.

I’ll admit, I’ve had my fair share of shopping sprees. And yes, I’ve absolutely felt the thrill of opening a parcel and trying on a new outfit. But I’m learning (slowly!) that having more things isn’t what makes me feel good – it’s about choosing pieces that really make me feel like me. Let’s be real, there’s something incredibly chic and confident about a girl who’s not just wearing the latest trend but who’s actually in love with what she owns. That’s the energy we need – girls who aren’t slaves to trends but who own their style.

So, my fabulous ItGirls, let’s make a little pact, shall we? Let’s not get caught up in the rat race of buying just because it’s new. Let’s cherish the pieces that make us feel like ourselves, that add a little sparkle to our days and don’t just end up in the back of the closet. We don’t need to throw out our wallets to keep up. True style isn’t about what’s trending; it’s about what resonates with us.

Because at the end of the day, you don’t need a million things to look amazing or to feel like an “it girl.” You just need to own what you’ve got, love it, and wear it with confidence. After all, fashion should be fun, not frantic.

Until next time, darlings – let’s keep it classy, keep it chic, and maybe slow down that scroll for the sake of our sanity.

XOXO
